Camara Lashawn Jackson is the visionary founder and CEO of Elite Learners, Inc., a Brooklyn-based nonprofit committed to empowering communities through education, mentorship, and violence prevention.

Since founding Elite Learners in 2016 with no initial budget, Camara has transformed the organization into a thriving force for change, now operating with a budget exceeding $5 million. Under her leadership, Elite Learners has expanded its impact from offering free reading enrichment programs to implementing wide-ranging initiatives, including mentorship, cultural arts, safe passage services, violence interruption, and crisis management.

Through innovative leadership and strategic fundraising, Camara has secured over $250,000 in capital funding and millions in city, state, and federal grants. The organization has made an indelible impact, reaching more than 500,000 New York City residents, employing over 2,000 individuals, and contributing to an 18% reduction in gun violence in key neighborhoods.

Camara’s academic accomplishments underpin her professional success. She earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from The Metropolitan College of New York and a Bachelor of Criminal Justice and Sociology from Virginia Wesleyan College.

Her journey is one of extraordinary resilience. Born with Sickle Cell Disease, Camara faces significant health challenges but continues to rise above them with grace and determination. A self-professed fashion lover, she lives by her mantra: “If I am going to be in pain, I might as well look good in the midst of it.”

Camara’s exceptional leadership has earned her numerous accolades, including the Brooklyn Salutes Award and recognition as a District 45 Woman of Distinction (2021). She is celebrated for her ability to inspire others and her unwavering commitment to creating safer, stronger, and more connected communities.
